Coaching the lifestyle changes to look and feel 10 Years Younger

01_POSTED : 7 JULY 2018

Age is just a number

01

This is a 56 year old man whom we will call Andy and he follows my advice. The reason I took this picture is because the most common goal for men is a 6 pack, most think it is attainable anytime up until 30! Thereafter, they believe the ability to achieve diminishes with every passing year. The truth is, the body makes huge hormonal changes in our 30’s, 40’s and 50’s which manifests into physical change: more body fat, man boobs, posture change, less muscle, loose skin, the list can go but makes no bones about it we are ageing. However the rate at which you age has a lot to do with how you live your life and is called your biological age. Your biological age can move up or down depending on how you treat it and of course is linked to longevity and health.

Andy does not do an exercise session over 30 mins! He does…. five sessions per week: three 15 minute sessions and two 30 minute sessions. One is a gym session and the rest are home based just using body weight. However this alone doesn’t cut it. (The muscle tone from training would always be there but would be typically, hidden under layers of fat.) In order to reveal his toned muscles, Andy has had to reduce his body fat by following my nutritional plan. Essential for this to be effective it is important that he is not hungry, that he doesn’t have cravings and that he has plenty of energy. This approach is always the hallmark of a balanced and successful “diet”.

It's not what knocks you down it’s how you bounce back

A bit more information about Andy.  He has actually been fit and healthy all of his life but on New Years Eve 2015 he had a severe stroke that could have killed him. He collapsed unconscious had 2 seizures before the ambulance arrived and another on the way to hospital. This came as a huge shock to him and his family as he had no apparent risk factors. On further investigation he was diagnosed with a heart condition, important to note not heart disease. It was this heart condition that triggered a normal body response of producing a blood clot that was fed to the brain. The MRI scan revealed that he had 3 previous cerebral incidents without even knowing about it. A traumatic incident like this takes significant time to rehabilitate and his full recovery, which was not expected, was noted as exceptional. We put this down to his previous healthy lifestyle and his continued health and fitness regime. So maybe the pictures are a bit more impressive than just being 56, he also recovered from a Stroke.

Cancer, Stroke and the Big 50

03

In my experience, most people have health fears of one kind or another, usually linked to what they have experienced with loved ones. Probably the most common fear is Cancer, its’ treatment and its’ gruesome effects. As a health and fitness professional I advocate a healthy lifestyle, in its many guises as a way of preventing many diseases or more accurately, reducing the risk of developing them. In May 2017, he was diagnosed with neck and throat cancer, was asymptomatic but had a lump in his neck. After biopsies and numerous tests they found it originated on the left tonsil and had expanded to the lymph node. As with the stroke he had no risk factors however, they found that he had the HPV virus which, when presented, causes neck and throat cancer in men. The same HPV virus is responsible for 85% of women’s cervical cancer and girls below 16 are now vaccinated.

Andy was given 6 weeks of radiotherapy (every weekday) and Chemotherapy (every Monday – 8 hour infusion).

The effects of the treatment were pretty horrific, not least was the inability to swallow as the radiotherapy caused sores and ulcers in his mouth and throat, but also damaged the salivary glands and taste buds. He had a staggering weight loss of 25lbs in 6 weeks. Approximately 14lbs was muscle loss, as the body went into metabolic crisis because of the toxic treatment, inability to consume enough calories and the metabolically hungry cancer. This left him emaciated, skeletal and with no energy. He couldn’t eat real food from the second week of treatment (July) until the 2nd week of December. All foods had to be liquidised and it wasn’t until November that he was able to stop the analgesics. Andy is now cancer free, as of April 2018. He has managed to put on 8lbs of muscle and is now back to a full exercise regime. His recovery has been noted as remarkable and this has been put down to his healthy lifestyle. Although his healthy attitude and application did not prevent the cancer his ability to recover and recuperate has dramatically improved because of it.

In Summary

So in summary, Andy is 56, a stroke survivor, a cancer survivor, is not yet at full fitness but on a positive trajectory. There are always obstacles put in our way as we strive to achieve, I’m hoping this story puts into perspective what is achievable despite what seems unsurmountable. How do the pictures look now? He’s 56, had a stroke and recovering from cancer that made him lose 14lbs of muscle in 6 weeks and couldn’t exercise for 6 months.

These pictures are of me, Colin Deans, and this story is my story. The pictures are not to impress you they are there to impress upon you that health and fitness goals are achievable at any age and I can help you. Spoiler alert….. it does take a level of enthusiasm and resilience!
